Pinoy art for charity

August 21, 2008

Filipinos artists based in Bahrain and Saudi will showcase their artistic talents at a charity art exhibition slated on August 22 and 23.

To be held at the Mšvenpick Hotel’s Al Murjan Ballroom, Muharraq, the event aims to promote the richness of the Filipino culture and heritage and to raise money for local charities.

It is organised by Bahrain-based Phenomena Productions, which operates under the Philippine Embassy.

The charity event, ‘Ang Mga Likha ni Juan dela Cruz’ (The Masterpieces of Juan dela Cruz), will feature an art exhibition and several workshops conducted by artists.

It will showcase more than 60 artistic works of Bahrain and Saudi-based Filipino painters, digital artists, sculptors, photographers, dancers and poets on August 22 and 23.

Organisations taking part include the Association of Filipino Artists Overseas Foundation Institution, Filipino Club’s Ispektrum, Saudi-based Kubo and the Gulf Photographers Network.

“This event is of a different magnitude, no-one has held an exhibition showcasing so many local Filipino artists,” said Phenomena Productions spokeswoman Karina Lazarraga at a Press conference held at the embassy in Zinj yesterday.

“These artists usually hold solo exhibitions, so this will be the first time they have come together.

“It’s a fusion of all the art forms - music, poetry, dance, painting and so on.”

The festival’s opening ceremony will take place at 10.30am on August 22, followed by a photography workshop from 1pm to 5pm.

A Tagalog public speaking workshop will take place from 9am to 11am, followed by a digital arts workshop from 11am to 3pm on August 23.

The festival will conclude with a gala dinner from 7pm to 9pm.

The entertainment will include an inspirational talk, a musical show, poetry recitals with visuals and a dance performance.

An exhibition featuring a wide selection of the artists’ works will be open from 8am on both days.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to the RIA Centre, Adliya and the Philippine Embassy’s Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), an institution that aims to assist distressed Filipinos.

“We hope to raise several

thousand for OWWA and RIA,” said Ms Lazarraga.

“We chose both charities because we wanted Filipinos and non-Filipinos to benefit - we wanted to pay homage to Bahrain.

“RIA was chosen because it plays an important role in giving attention to special needs children,” she said.

Tickets to the exhibition are priced at BD3 for each day or BD25 to attend the entire festival, including workshops and breakfast on August 22, as well as workshops and gala dinner on August 23.
