The sun high up in the cloudless sky was no match for the spirit of volunteerism displayed by Headstrong volunteers. Trading their computer screens and keyboards for bricks, buckets and shovels, 40 IT practitioners spent half a day to help in the construction of Zonta Village in Taguig City.
“This site was constructed by student volunteers of Poveda,” Rommel said. “Their parents did not know about this activity but was deeply touched by the heart of their daughters when they took knowledge that they helped in building this community.”
The build proper started just before 10am. Wearing protective gloves, the volunteers were divided and assigned to various tasks—from transporting bricks to the construction workers on the second floor to laying cement on the walls in the interior. Some painstakingly strained the sand to filter the rocks.
After a few minutes of trial and error, they were able to perfectly coordinate their movements so that the rocks are thrown to a separate pile away from the sand.
Snacks and drinks were served during the 15-minute break. Juice drinks and pandesal were shared amongst the locals who assisted the Headstrong volunteers in their respective assignments.
“We appreciate Headstrong for coming over and helping us build this site,” Alma, GK site manager, said in Filipino. “GK keeps a record of volunteers and we hope that the participants can come back for more home-building.”
Clothes collected during last year’s “24 to 24” donation drive, a month-long program where Headstrong employees donate clothes, food, books and other items, were forwarded to the would-be residents of Zonta Village.
