Featured Social Venture: Design Against the Elements

March 23, 2010

Know more about this initiative in this Greater Good Philippines interview with Illac Diaz, social entrepreneur and founder of My Shelter Foundation.

Design Against the Elements is a global architectural design competition meant to find a solution to the problems presented by climate change. Spurred by the devastation wreaked in the Philippines by tropical storm Ondoy (Ketsana) and driven by a powerhouse multidisciplinary group of organizations from the private, institutional, and government sectors, the project aims to draw together the most innovative minds in the fields of architecture, design, and urban planning to develop sustainable and disaster-resistant housing for communities in tropical urban settings.

The winning design will be built as a prototype disaster-resistant and livable eco-village in Taguig City, Metro Manila. The village will be the first green and disaster-resistant community in the country. It will provide a model that can be studied and replicated in similar areas. The finished project will house a marginalized community living in an environmental danger zone, giving them a sense of security, ownership, and awareness of sustainability that can be practiced at all levels in their everyday lives.

Bill Shaw – Co-founder of the Jeepney Magazine; Director of the Homeless World Cup in the Philippines

March 16, 2010

Empowerment.

This is the primary driving force behind Bill Shaw’s Jeepney Magazine.  Bill, with his wife Debbie, first came to the Philippines in 2002 on a mission under the organization, Wycliffe Bible Translators.  In 2007, they decided to prolong their stay to work directly with the poor.

But Bill wanted to give something more than just reaching out to the destitute.

In 2008, the Shaws established the publication—the first street paper in developing Asia—to provide a sustainable means of living to street dwellers.  Since then, the Jeepney has provided a career to countless poor people, and has had its share of success stories on poverty alleviation.

But more needs to be done.  And Bill’s small team of dedicated men and women are tirelessly endeavoring to widen the magazine’s circulation.

Bataan Death March 102K Ultramarathon 2010: A friend’s field report

March 11, 2010

“It is only through sacrifice that man can achieve true greatness.”

Maybe it was self-inflicted sacrifice, but the constant pain of training and the never-ending mental and physical struggle of long-distance running were necessary for them to get to the finish line.

I’m referring to the participants of the recently held Bataan Death March (BDM) 2010 Ultramarathon.  And one particular person stood out amongst them, primarily because he is the only person I knew who participated.

Francis Randy “F.R.” Hortelano finished his first 102-kilometer ultramarathon at this year’s BDM event.  And would you believe that he only started running a little less than a year ago?

I myself am a witness to his development, being his batchmate at AMCI.  From running 1.6 kilometers in 11 minutes to finishing first in our mandatory 15K run at under one hour and 20 minutes, F.R. stands as an inspiration to many who know him.

Read more about him at Running Diva’s blog.
