“It is only through sacrifice that man can achieve true greatness.”
Maybe it was self-inflicted sacrifice, but the constant pain of training and the never-ending mental and physical struggle of long-distance running were necessary for them to get to the finish line.
I’m referring to the participants of the recently held Bataan Death March (BDM) 2010 Ultramarathon. And one particular person stood out amongst them, primarily because he is the only person I knew who participated.
Francis Randy “F.R.” Hortelano finished his first 102-kilometer ultramarathon at this year’s BDM event. And would you believe that he only started running a little less than a year ago?
I myself am a witness to his development, being his batchmate at AMCI. From running 1.6 kilometers in 11 minutes to finishing first in our mandatory 15K run at under one hour and 20 minutes, F.R. stands as an inspiration to many who know him.
Read more about him at Running Diva’s blog.
