June 22, 2010

Dr. James Martin

Dr. James Martin, award-winning author and founder of global IT firm Headstrong, has pledged $50 million to The James Martin 21st Century School at the University of Oxford to fund projects aimed at resolving pressing global problems.

Headstrong has a deeply-entrenched presence in the Philippines through its Manila Global Delivery Center, which has successfully delivered more than 500 IT projects since 1987.

Dr. Martin established The James Martin 21st Century School at the University of Oxford with a donation of $100 million in 2005. The school aims to “formulate new concepts, policies and technologies that will make the future a better place to be”. In 2009 Dr. Martin pledged up to an additional $50 million if it could be matched by other donors.

This condition was met in April 2010.

Born in England, Dr. James Martin earned his degree in physics at Keble College, Oxford. Dr. Martin is the founder of several IT consultancy firms and was nominated for the Pulitzer prize for his book, The Wired Society: A Challenge for Tomorrow (1977). He established DMW (Doll Martin Worldwide) in 1981 that was later renamed James Martin Associates. Today, we know James Martin Associates as Headstrong Corporation.

Dr. Martin lives on his own private island in Bermuda. According to Computerworld’s 25th anniversary issue, he was ranked fourth among the 25 individuals who have most influenced the world of computer science. The $100 million donation ($50 million by him and the matching amount by other donors) will fund 20 projects aimed at resolving global concerns from methods of forecasting economic shocks to the preservation of plant species.
